I just watched this again after a while, and I literally thought this as I was watching. I was like this is such a good video - wait- he had to film and edit the entire thing while actually designing the product. I’d be so bad at that!!
Geez, at this rate you're becoming one of my most influential designers. Just by watching the video I already feel like a better designer. Great work on showing all this! Extremely valuable!
My man just made a product, from scratch to launch, pitch the project, talked to manufacturers and brands, marketed it, and documented all the process just to have a keyboard that matches his home. Mad. Respect.
This is freaking dope dude. Keep creating. This is so inspirational and fun. My buddy literally fell in love with your keycaps, not realizing who designed them. I was like ‘bro remember the dude with the greatest office of all time?? This is his keycap set.’ We were like no flipping way. I love the look of the print-your-own-paper keys, without anything inside them. So dope!
So nice to see this so brilliantly documented! Your ability to storytell is captivating. No underestimating the time you clearly put into this alongside the project itself!
You have been such a huge inspiration to start my own channel especially in the creation of my "Home Office Makeover". My gratitude towards you and your way to inspire people will never be enough!🙏
I've been following your videos for quite some time now. There's always something fresh to discover. Moreover, the soothing narration and unhurried pace of the videos create a unique atmosphere.

You said it better than I could so I’m just gonna piggy back off your comment and say ditto. What an amazing video from start to finish. Thank you for sharing with us
So cool how just a couple years ago you were posting about this little world you discovered of custom mechanical keyboards. Now you’re making one of the most unique sets that would be a staple in a custom enthusiast lineup of Keycaps. That is true passion and very much inspires me, nice work Matt! ❤
Excited to start writing with one of these keyboards one day! I'm curious, did you create a web site with notion or did you use a different tool such as square space? Either way, I'm super impressed with your process, approach and style. It's always a treat to get the notification that you've released a new video. Thanks Matthew!
Hey Matt. Yes, custom mechanical keyboards are so fun to build and type on. The website for Modern Musings I built with Squarespace. But there are 3rd party tools that allow you to link and turn a notion page into a styled webpage for others to view.
Wow, great video. Incredible integration of the sponsorship along with a lot of useful and appreciated insight into how this whole process works. I'll definitely be checking out more.
With every video you produce you reach a new high. These kind of documentation with full passion, transparency and details is very impressive. good job man keep producing.

This is such a great insight on creating a product. It truly feels like I’m part of the process and part of the story. I really want to support this product. ☺️🙏 excited for you Kuya 🎉
This looks dope! Thanks for doing this man. Not only the production is impressive but it gives viewers (at least on my end) the other perspective of starting your own brand.
As a junior designer myself, I can just say that this process demonstration is super inspiring and also works for me as a framework and as inspiration for my own projects, in which I aspire to reach the level of fidelity that you display! Greetings from Germany ;)
I wish that too, but I doubt it because each video is a mini-documentary of a new product Matthew designs and sometimes designs+builds and goes into a product on the market. He's awesome!
Amazing! really loved when the keycaps matched the sample, and the branding on Modern Materials is so great like you can acctually feel the texture on it, Thank you for documenting in such an appealling way your journey!
Thanks for being so elaborate! This is inspiring and communicates well that things take time, effort and patience. I'm only designing keycaps for myself via goblintech (because I can't find an ISO-BE layout), and thus, I can relate to some areas. But I don't have a background in design, nor a lot of experiencing in designing things. I do have experience in doing artwork for my music/albums and so on. I'm very impressed with the way you can document this all and the blog about it as well. I like your style a lot, very well thought out. Thanks for the video!
I guess this was inevitable for you as a designer, product developer and keyboard enthusiast. The set looks great and fits yours design as intended, awesome stuff
I really enjoy the appearance of the keycaps. It's unique, but somewhat approachable. Thanks for sharing your process. Do you consider adding an international kit? (Maybe on the PBT-Fans X-Ray kit?) I hesitate to buy the keycaps, because I can't use them on my daily drive. Here in Germany, we some times need our extra keys. Please keep up this inspirational work.
This is pretty inspirational vlog for designers. May I ask how could you decide the profit or sales margin in this cooporation? Did you have the leading role on this financial matter or other holders could have it? Every designers have their dream to bring their product to market, but the budget of development, sales, and its profit, these are the hardest one to make in balancing feasibility of new product development. How was your progress? and who has the last key role to have the legit right of product and design ownership?
I own the IP to the design. In this instance, there is a well-established royalty rate in the keycap space with this vendor. After talking to other vendors (in custom mechanical keyboards), the average is about 8-10%. But everything is negotiable, and every project varies. You can read more on my blog.
As someone who works in product, I'd love to know what your market discovery process is for these new releases. Absolutely love your content, it's incredibly inspiring and certainly influenced my career pivot into product!
Thanks. For this product, it was a lot of intuition and anecdotal information. Since I spend a lot of time in the custom keyboard world, and not finding the keycaps I like, it was an opportunity to make something. There's also comfort in knowing that it's produced on a limited small run.
Nice video buddy. Random question, at the start of the video you rolled out some interlocking plastic storage boxes which themselves had locking lids. Where did you get them from?
This is so inspiring!! Thanks for sharing such transparent behind the scenes process of how to make this happen! Congrats Matthew! Just one more thing I'd love to know if you don't mind asking. What's the revenue portion in genearl among designer, vendors and manufacturer?? And how long does it take to get paid as a designer role?
Thank you. I added some detail about this on the blog post linked in the description, the royalties for something like this are typically 8-10% on average. More if you have more to leverage.
